Since 2002 Kidrobot has proved to be one of the most successful companies dealing in designer vinyl toys. Their Dunny and Munny ranges, largely based on urban graffiti, now number in the hundreds but it’s their figures based on television cartoons that originally caught my eye.
So far Kidrobot have released collections based on characters from The Simpsons, South Park, Family Guy and Futurama, all modelled in the Japanese Kawaii (or ‘adorable’) style. Most of the collections feature 3in tall figures that ship in blind boxes – the contents are not labelled on the outside of the box – that sell for around £7 ($10). Over the last few years however the company has produced larger versions measuring between 6-7in, and the Robot Devil from their Futurama collection has just been released. Measuring 6 3/4in and shipping in a large cardboard box the figure is well made and very sturdy. Like Kidrobot’s other large Futurama figures – Wooden Bender, Dr Zoidberg, Nibbler and Hypnotoad – the head and arms move but unlike those other figures the Robot Devil doesn’t come with any accessories, which is a shame. The inclusion of his violin from the episode ‘The Devil’s Hands are Idle Playthings’ would have been a nice touch.
The Robot Devil sells for about £35 ($50) and like other oversized Kidrobot figures is a limited edition so once it’s gone, it’s gone (older Kidrobot figures can be found on ebay but their cost will only increase over time). Another nice Christmas stocking-filler for fans of Futurama, or vinyl toys, albeit for a very large stocking!
