In the mid 1990’s author Neil Gaiman and artist Charles Vess collaborated on a four part illustrated novella published by DC Comics’ Vertigo Press imprint. Stardust, a tale set in the land of faerie was hugely successful, even warranting a movie adaption in 2007.
A Fall of Stardust portfolio was published in 1999 by Vess’s own Green Man Press and contained 29 full colour plates measuring 6.5 x 10 inches (the size of a comic book) as well as two prose chapbooks. The portfolio shipped in a fold-out cardboard wallet and sold for $12.95.
A Fall of Stardust was released to help raise money to offset Vess’s wife Karen’s medical bills after she was seriously injured in a car accident. The portfolio included artwork from the top tier of comic book talent including Vess himself, Mike Mignola, Bryan Talbot, P. Craig Russell, Michael Zulli, Dave McKean, Jeff Smith, french artist Moebius and many more. The chapbooks were written by Gaiman and Susanna Clarke, author of the bestselling Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell.
To give this beautiful portfolio justice I’m going to spread the set out over three posts – here are plates 1 to 10. The next ten will appear in a few days time (click here), as well as more details on the chapbooks.
