A few months ago I posted some charming foreign language editions of JRR Tolkien’s beloved children’s story The Hobbitfeaturing illustrations from some truly talented artists. Time for another I think…

Kääbik was the Estonian language edition of The Hobbit, published in 1977 and illustrated by Maret Kernuemees. The book was released in hardback by publisher Eesti Raamat.

As well as illustrating the front and back covers Kernuemees contributed 24 black and white etched drawings for Kääbik. There are some wonderful images here, such as the dwarfs collapsing at a surprised Bilbo’s door, a rather creepy depiction of the Goblin King, as well the attack of the Mirkwood spiders. Unsurprisingly Smaug is well represented, first shown resting on his hoard of gold, and then attacking Lake-town.

For my favourite illustration though, I’m torn between Kernuemees depiction of Bilbo’s capture by the three trolls, and the Battle of the Five Armies. The scene with the trolls is rather menacing while the battle is surprisingly violent, more violent that I would expect from a children’s book. Kernuemees etched style of illustration works well too – check out the wonderful swirling patterns on Smaug’s wings.

Here is a small selection of Kernuemees drawings from Kääbik
