Here is the final batch of Trading Cards featuring Bernie Wrightson’s Frankenstein illustrations.
In the mid-1970s comic book artist Bernie Wrightston began working on illustrations to accompany one of his favourite books, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelly’s gothic masterpiece Frankenstein. Wrightson undertook the project without a commission, doing so out of sheer love for the story, and over the next six years he would would create 50 atmospheric pen and ink drawings to illustrate the story.
A few months ago I posted images from comic book artist Bernie Wrightson’s Frankenstein Portfolio. That set featured six large reproductions chosen from 50 pen and ink drawings the artist created in the late 1970’s to illustrate Mary Wollstonecraft Shelly’s gothic masterpiece Frankenstein.
Published by FPG in 1995 Chris Foss Fantasy Art Trading Cards was a collection of 90 base cards and six chase cards that featured the work of the popular science fiction artist. This post showcases cards #21-40, while the first 20 cards can be found here.
Over the years I’ve amassed a large collection of Portfolios by comic book artists, some of which I’ve already posted on this site. These 4-6 print sets, many from the early 1980’s, have always held a fascination for me, and while most of those in my collection are visually striking, Bernie Wrightson’s Frankenstein Portfolio from 1980 is easily the most beautiful.
